AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
126 AM PDT Thu Jul 17 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Inland temperatures trend low and remain warm and dry
into the weekend. The coastal stratus will remain more persistent
over the coastal regions, lowering the daytime highs for some
areas.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Inland temperatures are forecast to be a few
degrees cooler Thursday as the trough to the north slightly
deepens. The low- level inversion has strengthened, and will
remain strong to moderately strong this week. A weak shortwave
trough remains off the coast most of Thursday. In response, the
marine layer will further deepen and contribute to more diurnally
present coastal stratus. This will hold daytime highs down a bit
where clearing does not occur.
There is a very slight chance (less than 5%) for dry thunderstorms
in northern Trinity County Thursday afternoon. Model soundings show
very limited elevated instability and available moisture, with a
good amount of CIN.
&&
.AVIATION...Coastal clouds are well entrenched with little
clearing expected over the next 36 hours or so as a strong
inversion remains in place over the marine layer. LIFR to IFR will
likely persist at ACV and CEC. Winds will remain light at the
coast. The direction is the main challenge with strong coastal
eddies evident on satellite all day on Wednesday. A similar
situation is likely for Thursday with southerly winds favored in
the forecast.
Farther inland, the coastal clouds will spill into the near-coastal
valleys and possibly move north from Sonoma County into the Ukiah
area overnight. This could bring a brief period of low clouds to UKI
around daybreak. Otherwise VFR is likely for interior areas on
Thursday. /RPA
&&
.MARINE...Light winds and low seas are expected on Thursday into Thursday
night with the thermal trough located off the Northwest California
coast. As high pressure re-builds over the eastern Pacific Ocean the
pressure gradient should tighten over the coastal waters allowing
northerlies to strengthen Friday into this weekend. Moderate to
strong northerlies and steep seas are likely over the weekend with
small craft advisories possible, most likely in the outer waters.

&&
.EKA WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
CA...
None.
NORTHWEST CALIFORNIA COASTAL WATERS...
None.
